Weekend #5: Super Sweet

Desserts from all over!

I am proud to say that I am a pretty healthy eater.  It didn't use to be this way, but when I had 10+ kgs to lose, I had no choice but to eat healthily.  I cut back on meat consumption, and up my vegetables, opting for less or no gravy/seasonings. Even after I lost my excess weight, my motivation to continue down a healthy eating pathway comes from generally feeling and looking better (such as, better skin, clothes fit better, more energy, fall sick less).  And my tastebuds have also adapted to prefer cleaner tastes devoid of rich ingredients like cream, butter and oil.

But there is a time of the month when I just have some odd cravings for sweets.  And I will indulge.

#1. A generous scoop of Pistachio ice cream in a waffle cone ($4.80).
Texture of the ice cream was rich and smooth, but unfortunately the flavor was not intense enough and even leaned towards being coconutty.

#2. Chocolate Truffle Cake. 
It's how a chocolate truffle cake should be.  Rich, creamy, smooth and bittersweet. To top it off?  Just $5.

#3. Crepe with rum and raisin ice cream ($7.50). 
Freshly made and crispy on the edges, it was warm and satisfying.  The accompanying ice cream had a slight icy texture but I was hungry and it was good enough.  Oh, it should have come with either a toffee or chocolate sauce but I thought it would be too sweet, so I chose without.

#4. Waffles with chocolate ice cream, whipped cream and berries ($14).  Pretty on the plate and tasty in the mouth.

We had another dessert - "gula melaka panna cotta".  It was deconstructed with individual components laid across the plate.  It had - whole red kidney beans, green jelly looking cubes, crushed peanuts and a coconut panna cotta sitting in a pool of gula melaka sauce.  People around the table felt it was an interesting dessert concept and while it was good, it was a little too sweet.


Both are from what I now coin as the "best thing that happened in the East", at this newish place called The Coastal Settlement.  Decked out somewhat a cross between PS Cafe and the furniture store below Bar Stories, it was packing in the crowd.  Food menu is too diverse  to please everyone.  From the stuff that we tried, the stand outs include the thin-crust pizza (sort of similar to Timbre's) and the chicken curry.  I would skip the clam & mussel soup, and the seafood marinara.

#5.  Red bean souffle ($3.80).
We had dim sum for lunch at the Imperial Treasure Nan Bei (5th floor, Ngee Ann City) and this was one of our desserts.  I am intrigued how they could make this souffle, which was a ball of beaten egg white stuffed with mashed red bean and then deep fried.  It wasn't oily at all which was a bonus.
